NOTES ON THIS SIDE: No stinkers in this batch. The band rocks harder on this side than any other on this record which was daunting to approach in this format. It ended up not being that bad, as the songs are strong enough compositionally to transcend their arrangements, if that makes sense. The only one that gave me real trouble was Helter Skelter (I tried moving to electric for that song and it ended up feeling very disruptive to the project as a whole, so I scrapped it). People say that song invented heavy metal, which I think is unfounded, but it does still sound heavy in 2020 which is a feat. The unsung track here is Long, Long, Long - Harrison's strongest contribution to this album. When I listen to this recording, his influence on the modern indie rock/alt-country sphere is so clear and staggering. Lennon leads the way here, delivering four of his best. I particularly appreciate Sexy Sadie; it's so subtle I didn't realize how great it was until I learned it. Every song on this side is special in its own way. Even the song intended as a parody of British people playing the blues somehow ends up being awesome in earnest. This may be The Beatles at their most collaborative; showing that they're not only a "writing" band, but a "playing" band as well.
